ON THE BOARDS: NEW SALEM MAINTENANCE HEADQUARTERS AT THE QUABBIN RESERVOIR

A disastrous fire in 2018 destroyed the old maintenance headquarters for the north end of the 38-square-mile Quabbin Reservoir in Western Massachusetts. Clark & Green is conducting a study for a replacement facility which will be economical to build and maintain, highly functional, and redolent of the long American tradition of simple but pleasing park service buildings.

The larger vehicular wing is joined to the office wing by the entry, through which the work force passes to access lockers, restrooms, kitchenette, and meeting areas. The vehicular wing is a simple, highly functional pre-engineered steel enclosure for storage and light maintenance of work vehicles and equipment, while the wood-frame office wing consists of discrete rooms wrapping a spacious common area for meetings and training’s, with a high glass wall looking out to the surrounding wooded scenery and the road.
