STEPHAN GREEN

April 10, 1948 - May 13, 2023

Founder + Partner Emeritus

We are heartbroken at the loss of our visionary founder and leader and close friend. We are honored to carry forward the lessons and passion that Stephan brought to the practice.

Arriving in the early 1970’s, when his car broke down on the Massachusetts Turnpike, Stephan worked as a carpenter for three years in Berkshire County. He gave up his carpentry tools to study architecture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Stephan spent the 1980s working in the high intensity world of New York City architecture. Ultimately, he decided to return to the Berkshires to raise his growing family and in 1988 Clark & Green was born.

While primarily focusing on residential design, Stephan expanded the office’s work to include a variety of commercial and cultural building types. He led projects including the transformation of an historic building into the multiplex Beacon Cinema in Pittsfield, the conversion of an athletic field house into the 32,000 square foot multi-use Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre complex at Shakespeare and Co. in Lenox, and the award-winning Great Barrington Fire Station. He was proud to also lead the design of a new permanent home for Community Access for the Arts (CATA) in Great Barrington.

Stephan passed away on May 13, 2023 after living with Parkinson’s Disease for a number of years. He was surrounded by his family whom he cherished.

NICK GREENE

HEAD OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

Born in the Berkshires and raised quite literally up the street from the CGB office in Great Barrington, Nick joined the team in the Fall of 2019.

After receiving a Master of Architecture degree from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 2010, Nick returned to the Berkshires to begin his architectural career. He has since worked alongside multiple architects and builders on projects ranging from residential additions and new homes to adaptive re-use and civic projects such as the Clark Art Museum’s Tadao Ando Campus Expansion.

Such a diverse career path has led Nick to develop a passion for both modern design and historic architecture.  As head of Business Development, Nick may be one of the first people that prospective clients come in contact with; his knowledge and energy make for a great first impression.

Nick and his wife Tiffany purchased an historic farmhouse in downtown Ashley Falls, MA in 2018 which they are lovingly restoring. They enjoy much of their time outside with (and often chasing after) their two children; Juniper and Lucca. An avid hand drawer, it’s also not uncommon to find Nick in downtown Great Barrington sketching, water coloring or even leading tours showcasing the town’s architecture and history.

GLENN GOBLE

DESIGN DIRECTOR

Originally from North Carolina, Glenn began his college as an art student before attending the Cooper Union School of Architecture in NYC. In the 90s, Glenn spent a year traveling and working in Europe and the Middle East. This experience intensified his appreciation of the built environment and its impact on the individual human experience and its relationship to history, philosophy, and artistic traditions.

Glenn’s early professional life was spent in NYC, the world’s greatest laboratory for architecture. Glenn’s drawings and models have been exhibited and published in books, magazines and periodicals. They include representations of a wide range of projects - private residences, apartment buildings, museums, churches and synagogues, commercial offices, university buildings, schools, city plans, stained glass windows, a mural and an award winning short animated film.

Glenn joined CGB in 2000 to be part of its strong commitment to design excellence and its connection to a local community. His role requires sensitivity to the importance of local history and traditions while celebrating the variety and innovation of individuals and cultural institutions unique to the Berkshires.  In his role as Design Director, Glenn uses his skills, experience and sensibility to guide the design work of the team.

TOBIAS BERNECKER, MArch

DESIGNER

It was the crisp lines on his great-uncle’s drafting table that got him hooked. At the age of nine, Tobias knew he wanted to become an architect. Life took Tobias down its winded roads, but eventually he ended up where he wanted to be.

Born and raised in East Germany with an urge to see the big wide world, Tobias lived, worked, and studied in Israel, France, England and Berlin. He logged way too many miles in the air than he wants to admit, before landing in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 2011 where Tobias now lives with his wife and two children. At home on both sides of the Atlantic, they just returned from a 3.5-year stint living and working in Germany.

As architectural creations, Tobias is most fascinated by airports, hospitals and parking garages. In his practice Tobias enjoys dedicating his time and talent to public projects. Working with a big group of people and the knowledge of contributing to communities as a whole is very fulfilling.

After receiving his Master of Architecture from UMass Amherst in 2009, Tobias worked for several architecture firms and in the building materials industry in Western Massachusetts. Before joining CGB in September of 2021, Tobias worked as project architect on a €25MM  project at agn architekten in Halle, Germany.

STEVE MCALISTER, R.A.

SENIOR ARCHITECT

Steve McAlister has practiced architecture continually since 1977, in Salt Lake City, New Orleans, Connecticut and Massachusetts. His work in New Orleans included several years with August Perez, which was the New Orleans partner firm of Charles Moore. This diversity of background gave him experience with both large and small projects, as well as with new and existing buildings. Of particular note is his background with historic structures and historic districts, including the French Quarter, the Hartford region, Boston and Cambridge, among others.

He is a strong proponent of the idea that being a generalist is an advantage over narrow specialization in the practice of architecture, leading to the introduction of new ideas into established notions of building type and their design. His body of work is primarily in the commercial, institutional and nonprofit sectors, and his projects involving new and historic buildings have received AIA and other design awards at the city, state and multi-state regional level.

Steve is former chairman of the Planning Board of Tolland, MA and current treasurer of Berkshire South Regional Community Center. He is also a member of the Town of Great Barrington Zoning Board of Appeals.

AMANDA O’MALLEY, R.A.

SENIOR ARCHITECT

Amanda  joined us in March 2022. Originally from Westchester NY, Amanda has always been intrigued by the architecture’s relationship to the landscape. She has a wide range of design experience, from residential work to commercial & institutional projects.

Amanda enjoys working across a wide range of project scales, from new construction to surgical interior renovations. Her work strives to be contextual, comprehensive and in tune with the client’s needs. Amanda holds a Master of Architecture from Roger Williams University.

Amanda and her husband came to the Berkshires after 7 years in Boston. She can be found spending weekends in their woodshop pursuing personal projects for friends & family.

SHEENA EVANS-MORRIS

OFFICE MANAGER

Sheena is a British transplant who arrived in the Berkshires to visit her sister and unexpectedly fell in love with a Berkshire native whom she happily married. She brings to CGB an extensive background in office management having worked for many years in London and throughout the UK before moving to this area.

She also launched and ran her own company, Mission Control, before coming on board in 2022 as Office Manager. Preferring to remain in the background, she runs a "tight ship" and is much appreciated by her colleagues both for this and for her very British sense of humor.
